ActiveCell™ biofilm carriers offer unmatched process reliability and performance
The ActiveCell™ process provides CleanSea® systems with high-rate biological wastewater treatment performance reliability and simplicity of operation in a compact, ship optimized design.
ActiveCell™ technology employs thousands of polyethylene biofilm carriers operating in mixed motion within an aerated wastewater treatment process. Every biofilm carrier adds productivity via the provision of an active surface area sustaining heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria within protected cells. It is this high-density population of bacteria that achieves high-rate biodegradation productivity within the system, while also offering process reliability and ease of operation.
This technology provides cost-effective treatment productivity with minimal maintenance as ActiveCell processes self-maintain an optimum level of productive biofilm. Additionally, the biofilm attached to the mobile carriers within the system automatically responds to load fluctuations.

ActiveCell™ provides a number of advantages for shipboard wastewater processes:
Compact Design
The high-density provision of bacteria shrinks the physical space required to achieve optimized biodegradation within the system.
No Cleaning, No Backwashing, No Chemicals Required
ActiveCell processes are self-maintaining - no chemical additives, cleaning, or backwashing are required. Simply relying on the appropriate supply of aeration to the aerobic treatment process, biofilm carriers automatically generate high-density bacteria populations achieving superior biodegradation performance. ActiveCell biofilm carriers remove excess solids from the system with no operator attention required to do so. Provision and automatic maintenance of biofilm is accomplished by low-pressure blowers and maintenance-free medium bubble diffusers.
No Membranes
ActiveCell technology consists of biofilm carriers operating in complete mix within the biological process; there is no requirement to remove carriers when servicing systems. Conversely, membrane bioreator (MBR) technology has proven unreliable in shipboard system due to requirement for frequent removal of membranes. ActiveCell is not susceptible to the drawbacks of MBR processes; downtime is minimized, operation is simplified, and processes are not disrupted as maintenance is only required infrequently.
No Management Of Activated Sludge
ActiveCell technology operates shipboard with no management of return activated sludge (RAS) rates. As a result, process operation is simplified and associated process costs are reduced.
