Nitrification
ActiveCell™ IFAS® process in operation
Conventional activated sludge facilities are increasingly mandated to reduce the discharged level of ammonia in effluent to outfall in order to reduce fish toxicity. ActiveCell™ technology is ideal for cost-effectively increasing or enabling nitrification in activated sludge processes.
In a conventional activated sludge process, slow-growing nitrifier bacteria cannot attain sufficient nitrifying productivity within the process as they are washed out prior to mature development (particularly during cold temperature conditions that further inhibit the nitrifier growth rate). The conventional approach is limited in its ability to address this operational deficiency due to limitations in the sludge inventory the system can sustain.
The integration of ActiveCell IFAS technology with the activated sludge process establishes a high-density population of nitrifying bacteria within the system, and decreases the system's required sludge inventory. ActiveCell biofilm carriers sustain populations of nitrifiers within the process. This enables slow-growing nitrifier bacteria to mature and attain sufficient productivity, achieving efficient nitrification within the existing equipment.
