The ActiveCell™ IFAS® process can be implemented in hybrid (fixed-film/activated sludge, IFAS®) configuration within outdated extended aerations systems that are subjected to flow levels that have exceeded design capacity. By integrating ActiveCell technology, these systems can maintain target food-to-mass (F/M) ratios via the addition of fixed-film bacteria to the process.

Alternatively, conventional systems subject to increased biological oxygen demand (BOD) influent loads, typically from industrial dischargers, can increase the biological density of the process via the integration of ActiveCell biofilm carriers, eliminating the need to increase the mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) in the process.

Additional benefits of integrating a conventional process with ActiveCell technology include decreased sludge volume index (SVI) and consequent decreased sludge production.
