Conventional activated sludge facilities are increasingly mandated to reduce nitrogen levels in effluent discharged to outfall, in order to reduce increased occurrences of hypoxia (low dissolved oxygen) in many of North America's receiving waters.
ActiveCell™ IFAS® technology is uniquely positioned with many configurations that enable Total Nitrogen Removal within conventional activated sludge processes. ActiveCell IFAS processes are staged to function for nitrification followed by denitrification processes.
Many facilities do not have sufficient capacity to enable both nitrification and denitrification within existing activated sludge basins. The integration of ActiveCell biofilm carriers establishes a high-density population of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria without increasing mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS).
