Kan-Pak, LLC. Kan-Pak is a specialty dairy and dessert producer with a niche in the fast food and convenience store markets such as Chick-fil-A®, Dunkin Donuts®, Tim Horton’s and 7-Eleven®. Kan-Pak’s products include frozen cappuccino, creamers, yogurt, iced coffee, cocktail mixes, smoothies and ice cream. In 2006, Kan-Pak faced new sewer discharge requirements of <300 mg/L BOD. The challenge was to treat their high-strength BOD wastewater with its fluctuating organic loads, via an integrated treatment approach within a limited footprint. In order to achieve sewer limits stipulated by the Arkansas City WWTP, Kan-Pak was initially considering treatment of only its high-strength BOD laden process wastewater, leaving the sanitary and cooling wastewaters to be treated by the POTW. However, due to the large size of anaerobic digesters, the sensitivity to load fluctuations, and the production of methane gas, they decided to focus soley on aerobic solutions. The combined high strength process wastewater and the facility’s other wastewater streams effectively dilutes the high-strength BOD to ~1,120 mg/L and allows for aerobic treatment. Hydroxyl was approached by Kan-Pak to explore various wastewater treatment options available that would incorporate Hydroxyl ActiveCell biological treatment technology at the Arkansas City facility. Fishery Products International, Inc. Fishery Products’ Danvers, Massachusetts food processing facility was relying on an aging wastewater treatment system based on trickling filter technology. The system was under-sized and experiencing problems with overgrowth, channeling, sludge build-up, and odor complaints from the nearby community. As a result, Fishery Products initiated a multi-year evaluation of alternate technologies that would be expandable, fit within the existing system’s footprint, eliminate odor problems, and be easy to operate. The nature of Fishery Products’ business requires that the processing plant operate 350 days per year with a two week shutdown in July. The challenge was to provide and install a new Hydroxyl ActiveCell biological wastewater treatment system within the two week plant shutdown period during the summer of 2005, and deliver a cost-effective, reliable, and state-of-the-art treatment system.
